The weight & BCS tracker

Short answerWeight loss that works is measured, not felt. Log your dog's weight and body condition score together - VCA recommends recording both at each check - and the trend over weeks tells you whether the plan is working. This tracker keeps entries on this device only, and prints out for vet visits. It can't tell you whether a medical issue is involved; a dog whose weight changes suddenly, or whose shape worries you, needs your vet.

How to use it

Weigh on the same scale at the same time of day when you can - before breakfast is easiest to repeat. Add a body condition score from the BCS guide: hands on ribs, eyes on the waist, best guess on the 9-point scale is fine. Ask your vet how often to weigh during your dog's plan - the right rhythm depends on the dog.

Log a weigh-in

Add an entry each time you weigh your dog. Entries stay on this device only.

Reading the trend

Single weigh-ins bounce around with meals, water and bathroom timing, so judge the direction over three or four entries, not one. Drifting down toward target: note it and bring the log to your vet before changing anything. Flat for three or four consistent weeks: recheck portions and treats, then ask your vet about the calorie target. Dropping fast without a plan change, or any gain on a real plan: that's the vet conversation. Bring the printout - a written history beats a retelling every time.
